Osha update

It's been a while since I had an update on sweet Miss Osha. Unfortunately, it's not a lot of good news this time. Here's the update from her foster momma:

"It's been a long road with Osha, she's been well on her road to recovery with weight, skin, hair growth and so forth, her immune system and blood work was finally in the normal range, and It was decided that we start treatment for mange. The past 2 weeks have been heartbreaking for me as Osha started with a bad reaction that has been spreading rapidly. Steroids were started with other meds to gain quick control. It is imperative that she does not lick or chew! This has been a major chore. Collars of every kind have been purchased. Deafness creates Anxiety with all these devices, disorientation adds to her depression. Sores can't be covered. Osha is able to reach as a contortionist. I finally came up with a device. As funny as it looks, it has worked. Dr. Fuller is very happy with the healing of last weeks horrid outbreak, but new spreading continues rapidly. Scraping shows mange is dying at a fast rate, perhaps to fast, spreading strong reactions through a body that has already been through so much. Medication reactions is also still a consideration. There's also concern with her liver and not eating. I have cooked "everything" as well as syringed Baby Formula. I am relieved that Dr. Fuller will now Hospitalize Osha for a week. I have been extremely upset, but Dr. Fuller managed to put a smile on my face as together we had a good laugh over my contraption for Osha .... but hey ... if it works, that's all that matters .....  He will be using it. Please send prayers this week, we hope to get positive answers and healing!"

Osha has so many folks pulling for her, I KNOW she'll get over this bump in the road and be ready for her furever home real soon. And isn't her foster momma super creative to come up with this alternative for a cone?? It looks like Osha's having her furs done, BOL.

Please everybodys keep your paws crossed and keep Osha and her foster momma in your thoughts. I'll let you know more when we have updates!

Our new houseguest!

Things are very exciting at my house right now. We had a special new houseguest check in last night.

Meet Montana! She's an LBR foster dog, and her foster momma is going out of town for a week or so. So Momma said she could come hang out with us! We did a careful inspect of her when she first arrived, but she fit right in with the pack!

We had a grreat get-to-know-you walk together last night, then all three of us walked together this morning. She goes a little faster than Cinderella prefers with her old bones, and she hasn't learned that the bunnies around here are just Bugs and his family, not the ninja spies like most bunnies, so she still tries to chase them. But otherwise she's grreat on the leash and just looooves walkies.

She was a little unsure about everything last night, but when it was bedtime she trotted right into the bedroom with us. Momma didn't make her go in her kennel to sleep, but she went right in anyway and curled up all night. She said it's nice and cozy! She went in again this morning when Momma had to go for work, not a peep!

I think we're going to have a fun week. I'll share more pictures of Miss Montana as we get some better ones. She didn't want to hold still enough for the camera yet!

Celebrate our golden oldies!

Did you know today is Senior Citizen Day? Well, it IS! And that means it's a day to honor all the older folks in our lives that make them so much richer. Momma and I definitely have some senior citizen love, because we're surrounded by seniors in my house. That's right! First there's

Scribbles! He's 16 years old. That's not too old for a cat, though. Momma says we'll have him around to grumble at us for a while still.

The next oldest is...

Cinderella! My beeYOUtiful sissy. She turns 13 in exactly one month. That's pretty old for a boxer, unfortunately. She's pretty deaf and blind these days, but she still rolls in the grass like a dog half her age!

Then our final senior is...

Pigeon! My kitty sister is 12, but she doesn't look it. She looks almost just the same as when she found Momma 11 years ago.

Momma says she LOVES her golden oldies. Senior pets are the best because they've gotten their crazies out and know the value of a good long snuggle.

We'll have one more senior in our house soon, too. Guess who?

That's right, ME! My barkday is coming up in October, and I'll be 7. That makes me officially a senior, and I've got a nice gray muzzle to show for it. I think it makes me look distinguished, don't you?

I loves my momma

And I'm not afraid to show it!

Edit: I just realized that today is Oz's 2nd Annual Bad Poetry Day! OMD, I totally lost track of days. So here is my poem in honor of the day:

I loves my momma, and I cannot lie.
You other doggies might deny.
But when my momma comes in with a treat in her hand
and my leash in her other hand
I start waggin'!

Those nubbie wiggles
always seems to make her giggle.
Just a tail wag's not enough,
Momma calls me her wiggle-butt!

Thank you, thank you, I'll be here all week. BOL

Pet Safety Week: Storm Safety!

Hello, folks, and welcome to the Legacy Chronicles' contribution to Pet Safety Week! OMD, there have been SO many grreat events going on this week. I've learned so much about how to stay safe in all kinds of conditions.

Today I'm going to talk to you about STORM SAFETY. Here in Texas, we get all kinds of storms. Big loud skeery thunderstorms, big twister tornadoes that will take you to Oz, and hurrycanes that will drown you out. Blergh!! So Cinderella and I are well-equipped to tell you all about how to stay safe. We've got tips for safety before, during, and after every kind of storm.

Remember the Dog Scouts motto: Be pawpared!

Before the Storm:

Being prepared is the most impawtant factor in staying safe in storms. You should help your human put together an emergency kit for storm survival. This is good for if you have to flee suddenly, like in a hurricane, or if you have to batten down the hatches and ride out a storm or wait for power to be restored after a bad storm. Your pet kit should include:
- Food and water for three days
- A week's supply of any medications
- A copy of vaccination and veterinary records
- A pet first-aid kit

Don't furget food and water bowls and a comfy place to lie down during the storm. Make sure you have a kennel handy or an extra leash so you can stay together if you need to evacuate suddenly.

During the Storm

Storms can be so skeery for us because we can hear, smell, and sense things that our humans can't.  So it's impawtant to have a safe place to go during a storm. This should be an interior room, like a closet or a bathroom, where we'll be safe from broken windows and flying debris. If you're most comfortable in your crate, that may be a good place to spend a storm, since it gives an extra sense of security.

Treats are a nice way to stay calm during bad weather!

Humans need to remember to stay calm, since we pick up on their moods. Extra treats and cuddles can really help keep everybody calm. A light massage, especially behind the ears, can be extra calming. If you get especially anxious during storms, your human may want to consider getting an herbal calming product or a prescription calmer from your dogtor.

Thundershirts are another wonderful help for especially anxious pups. They're a special kind of jacket that fits very close and feels like a nice soothing hug. I've never used one myself, because I don't get very anxious during storms, but I've talked to some of my foster siblings and they say it's a huge help. If you don't have a Thundershirt, a tight t-shirt can help too.

Hopefully you won't have to make a swim for it!

After the Storm

Once the storm has passed, you can't relax your vigilance yet! Make your human check your yard very carefully before letting you out. They need to make sure the fence is still up, no holes, and the gate securely latched. They should also check for debris in the yard that could be dangerous. When you go on your first walkies after the storm, keep an eye out for more debris that might cut your paws or block your path.

If the worst happens and you escape during a storm, stay calm! Your human is sure to be looking for you. You should definitely have your collar with ID tags on during a storm so they can find you most easily. And remind them to get you microchipped to give you an extra insurance to find your way home. Even though the flashy beast can be annoying, you also want to make sure your human has up-to-date pictures of you to send to Animal Control or make posters and flyers.

Walking the neighborhood to check out the storm damage.

So there you have it, folks! If you just do a little bit of preparation in advance, you and your human can ride out a storm in safety and comfort. Stay safe and dry out there, my furiends!

Every princess has a castle

She just needs to find it!

Let me tell you about Zsa Zsa. I've talked about her from time to time on this blog, because she's been searching for her furever home for a long time. She's been a foster dog with LBR since September 2011. In all that time, she met a few families, but she always got turned down for a younger or smaller dog. ZZ is is 6 years old and a boxer/mastiff mix, so she's a BIG girl!

ZZ's foster momma had just about given up on finding a home for her, since it had been almost 3 years. But she faithfully took ZZ to pet fairs and on home visits to meet families. And guess what???

ZZ found her pawfect home!!! They fell in love with her at furst sight. They love her size, because they wanted a big dog to make the momma feel safe at home alone. ZZ loved them immediately and rolled right over to let them rub her tummy! She never does that with strangers. But she knew they weren't strangers, they were her furever family. As her new momma said, "we have bonded, and Zsa Zsa has my heart and I have hers." <sniff> Don't you just love it??

And guess what? ZZ's momma knows that she's still a princess despite her size!

Congrrats, Zsa Zsa, I'm SO SO SO happy you've found your furever family at last. You were so patient waiting for them. I KNOW you'll all live happily ever after!

Mail call!

Oh boy, oh boy, you'll never guess!! Momma came in from the magic mail box, and there was a package for ME! (Okay, for me and Cinderella.) It was from the Crabby Girls! Cinderella and I won their contest to pick a name for their new dog statue. We chose Davy Jones, because it's a good nautical name and he was Momma's favorite Monkee. BOL!

So anyway, Momma brought in the box and showed it to me. I was so excited, I told her to open it RIGHT AWAY!

Ooh, there was a very nice note from the Crabby Girls inside. It's very impawtant to read the card before you start diving into the presents, you see. I'm glad I got this sweet note from Sheldon, Beachnut, and Oceana.

What's this, Momma? It looks exciting! Oh, it's a tough discus, just right for outside play!

And... and... OMD! Momma, I don't know what this gray thing is, but I LOVES it already! It's soft when I squeeze it, it bounces, it has tough rope arms and legs for playing tug, and it SQUEAKS!! Now now now I want to play with it NOW!!

Okay, okay, I'm posing with my pressies. Thank you very much, Crabby Girls!

NOW can I -- fine. Since it was Cinderella's package too, she needs to pose. Here. She's smiling, I'm looking at the camera, it's a package deal.

Now THROW THE GRAY THING!!!!

OMD, this is the best pressie EVER!! Thank you, Crabby Girls and your Hands. I'm over the moon!
