I am jumping for joy this morning!
I was going to have a big post this morning about some legal troubles LBR is facing. See, some meanie jerkface reported us for not paying state sales tax. We said "Of course not, because shelters and rescues are exempt!" Everyone knew that. All rescues operated that way, and all our tax people told us we were right. Except when the Attorney General looked at the law because of the complaint, he said, "Uh-oh, the law only says shelters. Rescues have to pay!" Not only were we going to have to pay back taxes to 2007, but also interest and penalties of over $30,000!!! It could've driven us out of business, and definitely would've destroyed smaller rescues.
So why am I jumping for joy?
We heard from the Enforcement Division down in Austin, after THEY heard from some state legislators we'd contacted. They looked at the situation and said, "Don't be silly, why should you have to pay all that when everyone thought you were doing it right until now?" Those are some smart pups!! So no back taxes, no interest, and no penalties! We'll still have to pay sales tax from now on -- which is silly, and we hope we can change that law in the future -- but it won't drive us out of business!
So get your FriYAY on and join LBR in celebrating!!!!
