Blogville Emergency Drill -- Fire alarm!

Attention, Blogville! This is Emergency Services Manager Casey calling a Blogville Emergency Drill! Today's theme is FIRE SAFETY!

Do you know how to stay safe if there is a fire in your home? The first step, of course, is PREVENTION. Tell your peeps not to keep any open flames, like candles, where you might knock it over or knock something flammable into it. Your peeps should also check their stove knobs, so you (especially the kitty variety) can't accidentally turn on the stove and catch something on fire.

Step two is HAVE  A PLAN. Talk to your peeps about what will happen in a fire. Make sure if there are lots of people in the house, there is someone designated to get you guys to safety, so everyone isn't thinking someone else is handling it. Keep extra leashes located near the door (or near your kennels if you're crated during the day like we are) to make sure it's easy to help you get out. Make your peeps practice getting out (and getting YOU out!), including knowing what to do if the main exit is blocked.

Step three is HELP THE PROFESSIONALS. You want to make sure to help the fire fighters help you if there is a fire. Monitored smoke alarms -- the kind that don't just make noise at home, they send a signal to somebody to call for help -- are very helpful if you are home alone during the day. Also, there are decals you can put near your doors so the fire fighters know what pets are around that will need help. You can get them at Amazon or any pet store.

So there it is. Remember PREVENTION, HAVE A PLAN, and HELP THE PROFESSIONALS! Talk to your peeps about all these steps, and practice your escape plan. Fire safety is no laughing matter!
