Around 75% of LBR dogs come into our program heartworm positive. Each one of them has to go through heartworm treatment, which is miserable. The treatment alone is three days, and then you have to spend four entire weeks of bedrest! With as active as boxers are, that's sheer torture. But if you don't stay completely calm and non-excited, the dying heartworms could form a clot and give you a heart attack or a stroke. Treatment is definitely no picnic! Because of the precautions LBR volunteers take, we very rarely lose a dog to heartworm treatment. But every now and again, we're reminded of just how dangerous it can be.
Godspeed, sweet little Jane Eyre. You'll run free at the Rainbow Bridge now, without all those yucky wormies. I'm sorry we didn't get you in time to save you.
PLEASE make sure your humans give you heartworm preventative!!
On a happier note...

Run Free and FAST little Jane Eyre. What a SHAME. I know that the monthly treatment is not cheap... but I still don't understand why peeps don't FIND a Way to get it.... OR at LEAST surrender so that the INNOCENT ones WILL get the prevention they so deserve.

You must remember most of the time the dogs that get to LBR weren't in the hands of responsible pet owners in the first place. Sad but true.
