Happy birthday, Hammer!

Guess who this handsome guy is? His name is Hammer, and he's the reason LBR exists!! Auntie Sharon, LBR's fearless Pack Leader, adopted him when he was a little bitty puppy. He was the very first boxer she'd ever had, and because of him she fell in love with the breed and started to get active in boxer rescue. That led to her founding Legacy Boxer Rescue and saving hundreds of dogs, including yours truly!

And guess what?? Hammer turned 10 years old this weekend!

All of us at the Legacy Chronicles would like to wish the Hammster a very, very happy birthday, and our biggest, most sincere thanks for inspiring Auntie Sharon to found LBR. We love you!!

And just because she's pretty too, here's Hammer's sissy Ginger wishing him a very happy birthday -- and hoping he'll share his pupcake!

Dog of the Day: Alanna

Hey everybody, it's time for another Dog of the Day! And this time I have an extra special one for you. Say hello to ALANNA!

Isn't she just the prettiest thing? I love her to pieces. She's so sweet, and SUCH a good girl at our pet fairs. She has about a million foster brothers and sisters, and she gets along with them all!

Alanna is about 18 months old, and a petite little flashy fawn. She loves to curl up with her peoples or play with other dogs. She's good with kids, and she even ignores the kitty she lives with. Wow! She's a champion master snuggler, too.

Alanna just loooooves to play with her toys. And, well, we're not putting her on the show any time soon, but let's just say that there's a little "hoarding" involved! She tells me she just likes to make sure they're properly taken care of and doesn't trust those other dogs she lives with to treat them right.

Now, there's one thing about Alanna you probably didn't notice in all the earlier pictures. Well, she only has three legs! She came to LBR with a very badly broken leg, and after our vets worked on it, they said that they couldn't fix it and it would be better to just take the whole thing off instead. Yikes! I'd be so super scared if that happened to me, but Alanna just shrugged and said, "Whatever you say, Doc!" I know now that she wasn't scared because she knew she was still going to be an amazingly pawsome boxer even with only three legs. She runs and jumps and plays just like everyone else.

Wow, look at her go!  She's a grreat boxer baby, and she wants a family of her own to love and snuggle. If you're interested, go check out her bio page at savetheboxers.com today. And she's even going to be at our Pet Fair tomorrow, so you can meet her yourself! Once you do, I know you'll love her just as much as her foster parents do. So fill out your application today and say you want an ALANNA to love!

A thankless job

Momma came home early. I was trying to sort for recyclables, but she didn't understand. See if I ever help her do chores again!

Sad news

I'm knocking my regularly scheduled post to tomorrow so I can bring you some very sad news. You may remember my post about LBR foster Boz, who was found without a tongue. We never did learn how it happened, but I don't think he was born with it because he was struggling really hard in his foster home. He could eat, but he had a very hard time drinking and couldn't stay hydrated or cool. Finally, yesterday, his foster parents and LBR management made the very difficult decision to help Boz to the Rainbow Bridge.

We'll miss you so much, Boz, but I'm not sad for you. Boxers are meant to give giant face-slurping kisses, clean up all those crumbs our humans drop, and lick peanut butter out of Kongs. You weren't able to do any of that, and I know it made you so very sad and confused. Now you're free and whole again, and you can do everything a boxer is supposed to. I'm so sorry we couldn't help you here on Earth, but you'll always be part of the Legacy family. We love you, Boz!

What?

"Sorry, was this your chair? Not anymore..."

LBR foster April May has made herself at home in her new foster home. Ha hah, good girl, April!

Homer the Hero!

Hey everybody! As you know, my mission in life is to share stories about how incredibly PAWSOME the dogs of Legacy Boxer Rescue are. That's not tough, because we have some pretty darned amazing dogs here. Today's story could go in a comic book, because it has a superhero in it. Say hello to LBR alum HOMER!

It's a bird, it's a plane, it's Super Homer!

Here's a story one of our LBR volunteers shared yesterday in honor of Homer's one-year adoptiversary:

"Since today is Homer's adoption anniversary, I thought it would be the perfect day to tell you all just how special Homer is. He is literally a life saver and I'm not talking metaphorically speaking either.....

As many of you know, back in November, my husband Eric had a heart attack. What most of you don't know, is that if it wasn't for Homer, Eric probably would not be here today. Eric firmly believes, and I agree, that Homer saved his life!

Eric and I had gone to do some work for Melanie, Homer's mom. Eric was going to do some landscaping and I was house cleaning. When we got there Homer and his brother Shankly greeted us in the usual boxer fashion, nubs going like crazy, lots of kisses and jumping all over the place! After the initial greeting they both seemed to calm down and were quite curious to see what was going on. Melanie showed us both what to do and we both began to do our thing. Homer and Shankly were outside, watching Eric and doing their own thing. After a little while, we noticed that Homer seemed to be barking a lot. So Melanie brought him inside. As soon as he was in the house, it was clear that he wanted back out. Melanie told him no barking and let him back out. Wasn't a few seconds and he was barking again. This went on a couple of times. He would start barking, Melanie would let him in and then he would let her know that he wanted back out quickly. Soon after this, Eric came in the house. He was sweating profusely, so I thought he had done too much too quickly and was over-heated. He said he wasn't feeling well and needed to sit down. Homer was still barking a bit, and it was clear that he was barking at Eric.

But it wasn't a nervous bark, or the bark you hear when a stranger approaches. As he barked his nub was going a mile a minute. It was almost like a play bark, but not a play bark. At first, I wasn't really all that concerned about Eric, I was still under the impression that he had just over heated. I remember telling him to just sit for a few minutes and he'd be fine, as I went back to my cleaning. After a few minutes, Eric looked much worse and when I touched his forehead to wipe of the sweat, instead of it being hot from over-heating, he was ice cold. He then told me that his heart hurt and he couldn't feel his arms or legs. With Melanie's help, and Homer following, barking away, we got Eric to the truck and rushed him to the hospital. He was admitted immediately and was in the cath lab in less than an hour having a stint put in and a clot removed.

After he woke up he told me how it wasn't long before the pain started that Homer started barking at him. Eric said that Homer would get right next to him, nub going a mile a minute and then he would start to bark like crazy. At one point the pain got really bad and Eric sat down in a chair that was in the yard. He started to pass out, and at that point, Homer again started barking and proceeded to start licking Eric's hands and arms, and then he climbed on Eric's lap and began to lick his face, bringing Eric around a bit. It was then that Eric knew he needed to get into the house and get to us. If Homer wasn't outside and wasn't barking or licking Eric, Eric probably would have died right there in that chair. Eric tells everyone that it wasn't just the doctors that saved his life, it was Homer too! He believes that if it wasn't for Homer, he wouldn't be here today.

So today we want to say, "Thank you Homer! You are an absolutely amazing dog. It is because of you that Eric is still here and we are still a happy family!"

Big hugs and kisses to you Homer! We love you!!"

Gosh, little old me? I'm blushing!

Aww, and he's modest too! Thank you, Homer, for saving Eric's life and showing everyone what an amazing dog you are!

Dog of the Day: Miss Piggy!

I have a wonderful Dog of the Day for all of you pawsome folks today. She's so amazing, she has to have two names! Her LBR name is Miss Piggy, but her foster momma likes to call her Peggy Sue.

Peggy Sue is a 5-year-old fawn girl with lots of love to give! She loves to go on walks and snuggle on the couch to walk TV. She has a Boston terrorist -- er, terrier for a foster brother, and they get along just grreat! See how cute they snuggle?

Peggy Sue's a smart one, too! She knows how to sit and shake with both paws. (I'm just left-pawed. If Momma tries to make me give her my right paw, I look at her like she's crazy.) And she's house-broken and crate-trained too! She's a fast learner and picks up new stuff all the time.

How can you see this pretty face and not start singing "Peggy Sue, I love you!"? If you think she's the dog for you, go check out "Miss Piggy" on LBR's webpage today!

Um... really?

You know, the good folks at LBR have been doing rescue for so long that we start to think we've seen pretty much everything. Then something new will come along that will have us all scratching our heads and saying "Huh?"

This handsome guy is Boz.

Now, you'd never know it to look at him, but he has a medical problem that made all of us go "That can happen??" His foster parents noticed he was having a hard time eating, so they took him to the vet. The vet checked him all out and figured out the problem -- he doesn't have a tongue! I know, can you believe it?! He just has a stump of one. We don't know how it happened.

I bet everyone's wondering what we were at first -- "so, um, how does he eat?" The answer is slowly and messily, but he can do it! See, his foster parents even made a video to prove it.

Boz definitely has a lot of struggles in life. But now that he's with LBR, things are going to be a whole lot better for him! He'll always have a hard time because of his tongue, but he's settled in at his foster home and is doing just grreat! He loves to play with his foster brother.

So never try to say you've seen it all. The universe will find something really weird to prove you wrong!

Roses for Rescue ROCKED!

I hope everyone had a totally pawsome Easter! The volunteers of LBR spent Saturday hard at work at our biggest fundraiser of the year, Roses for Rescue! It's always a long and exhausting day, but it's so worth it!

We have to thank NRH2O Family Waterpark for letting us use their parking lot when our usual location was unavailable this year due to construction. It was a grreat set-up, and we had lots of room for plants and customers!

See how busy they are? That's how it was all darned day! There were so many people who came out to buy amazing roses, geraniums, and ferns. PLUS we had cool doggie stuff for sale and representatives from Cookie Lee jewelry.

After our TV special on Good Morning Texas last week, the nice people at RaceTrac called us up to help too! They donated all sorts of water, coffee, and cold drinks for our volunteers as they worked out in the hot summer sun. (Here's LBR foster Bentley making his selection.) They even ran a "how many pieces of kibble in the bowl?" contest to win a RaceTrac gas card, with all proceeds to LBR. Wow!

It was a really, really amazing day. Everyone worked so hard, and it was such a success. We got LBR's name out to lots of new people, and the best part...

Are you ready????

We made over $25,000 to help LBR!!!!!!! That's a $6k increase over last year, WOW!! That's a LOT of green papers, and it will do so much to help all our boxers in need. We can pay for food, heartworm treatments, spaying and neutering, vaccinations, and all sorts of other medical treatments. Yaaaaaaay!!!!

Thanks to everyone who helped make our day a success. You're all PAWSOME!!!

The Easter Boxers are here!

Easter is almost here, so I hope everyone is ready for the Easter Boxer to come visit you and leave yummy treats for you.

LBR foster Tessa looks like she is ready for those treats now, please.

LBR alum Stevie doesn't really need the bunny ears, 'cause she's got adorable ears of her own.

I think LBR alum Bonsai is pouting.

Wait, that's not a boxer! Oh well, we all love Willow anyway. She's Bonsai's big sister, and she has enough attitude to be a boxer if she wants. :)

LBR foster Miss Demeanor was very well-behaved for her photo shoot and didn't try to chew the bunny even once. Are you impressed?

LBR alum Conrad (he just got adopted last week!) is happy to spend Easter with his new family.

Bevo had the right idea -- no silly ears for him!

LBR alum Sheena was amazing about posing with not just ears but a whole basket full of props! (And no, your eyes aren't playing tricks on you. She's an honorary boxer.)

Of course, how could it possibly be a holiday post without a picture of my gorgeous self? Yeah, I'm sexy and I know it.

My sissy, LBR alum Cinderella. Before Mom squees over it even more, let me point out that her ears have a tiara. (They're from Target. Mom gets asked a lot. Usually after she points it out and squees some more.)

"Ur argument iz irrelevant. I haz princess ears."

Hoppy Easter from Legacy Boxer Rescue!!

PeeS: It's UP!! Our fabulous TV segment aired this morning. You can find it online at Good Morning Texas or watch below. Didn't Auntie Sharon do a wonderful job?? Kisses to Bexar, Marshmallow, and Moby, our TV stars!!

We're ready for our closeup!

Look at LBR foster Moby getting a fancy spa treatment! Why are LBR dogs getting so spiffed up?

Because they're going to be on TV today!! LBR fosters Moby, Marshmallow, and Bexar (pronounced like Bear) are going to be featured on "Good Morning Texas" this morning, along with LBR Pack Leader Sharon Sleighter to talk about our big Roses for Rescue fundraiser! Mom set the DVR so we can all watch it together tonight.

If you're in the DFW area, watch Channel 8 WFAA at 9am. We don't know exactly when our segment will be, but sometime after 9am. They should post it on their website afterward, so I'll share the link once I get it! Go Marshmallow, Moby, Bexar, and Auntie Sharon!!!

PeeS: If you heard about the super crazy scary tornadoes in DFW yesterday, I'm okay and so are all of the LBR foster homes and volunteers! It was an incredibly crazy day and we were all super worried about each other, but everyone came through okay.

Pupdate: Because of the tornadoes, they're not going to be airing our segment today. They're still taping it, but it won't air until tomorrow. I'll share a link as soon as it's online!

What a weekend!

I talk a lot about the LBR foster dogs that are out looking for their furever homes and the volunteers who work so hard to help them. So I thought today I would share some of the pawsome results all that hard work can achieve. LBR had a banner weekend and totally rocked the adoptions. Look at all these doggies that found their furever homes!!

Marilyn Monroe is now going to be called Oshie, and I have a feeling that little girl is going to spoil her lots and lots!

This one makes me SOOOOO happy! Timber is being adopted by an LBR volunteer, Hilary! I just love it when they get to stay in the family. You sure can tell it's a love match, huh?

Handsome Vaughan found a home where he fits right in. He's in the red harness, and his new sister Zoe is in the blue. They could be twins!

I think Heath is pretty happy with his new daddy. He picked out a good one! This adoption makes me SO happy because Heath has been waiting a really really really looooong time for his pawfect family. He had to work super hard on manners and training, and his new dad thinks he's the bee's knees!

Guess who else is going to be a spoiled princess by her big sister? Harlee!

AND her foster sister Klein decided she didn't want to stay home without Harlee, so she found a new furever home too! Her new name is Penny.

Conrad's new name is Harvey, and his new mom and dad are going to spoil him like crazy!

Finally, Asaboy found a grreat home and a new sister he just can't stop playing with!

WHEW! I don't know about you guys, but I'm exhausted. That was a lot of work, but what a fabulous weekend!! I just love seeing my LBR buddies find pawfect homes like I did. Go Team LBR!

PeeS: If you want to help LBR keep helping boxers in need (and live in the Dallas/Ft.Worth Metroplex), stop by our big fundraiser this weekend! Roses for Rescue is LBR's biggest fundraiser of the year. You'll meet lots of pawsome LBR volunteers, get to pet some adorable LBR doggies, and get some amazing flowers for your garden. Win-win-win!!

DoublePeeS: I wanted to take a moment to ask for some crossed paws and good vibes for my furiend Tootsie, the Bicontinental Dachshund. She ate something she shouldn't have last night and is fighting for her life at the vet right now. If you have a moment, please stop by and let her worried momma know we're thinking of her.

Dog of the Day: Jacobia!

Hey there, blogger peeps! I hope everyone had a grreat weekend like I did! It was bright and sunshiney here, so Cinderella and I spent a lot of time playing in the backyard, going on walks, and napping in sunpuddles with the kitties. Ahhhh, this is the life!

Anyway, it's a new week, and I wanted to start it off by sharing the story of a pawsome LBR foster dog who's looking for his furever home. Meet JACOBIA!!

Jacobia is almost three years old, and he's just about perfect. In his own words, " I don't know how to put this, but I'm kind of a big deal. People know me. If you've ever met me you know that I'm a serious chick magnet, I'm the whole package! I'm handsome, fun, smart, confident, and strong. What's not to love?!"

What indeed? He's got all the LBR volunteers swooning over him, and that crew sees some pretty amazing boxers every day. (Hello, they see ME!) Jake is dog-friendly, though he prefers a more laid-back buddy over a dominant one. He really likes the ladies! He's also kid-friendly!

Jake says, "I'm cool to do whatever as long as I'm with you. I have lots of energy and love playing outside and with my toys, I'll prance around and show off for anyone who will watch. If you're looking for a running buddy, I'm your man! We can do lots of fun stuff together, whether it's throwing a ball around the backyard or curling up on the couch to watch the big game. I'm a pretty perfect combination of energetic and laid back, so just tell me what you want me to do and I'm on it. What can I say... I'm pretty awesome!"

If you're interested in learning more about Jacobia, go here to check out his bio. And while you're at it, why don't you fill out an application form? How can you resist this face?

Good luck finding your furever home, Jake! You deserve it!
