Hi there, folks! Since today is Travel Tuesday, I thought it would be pawfect to ask all my friends out there fur some advice! See, Jessie and I REALLY want to go to BAR, the Blogville Awesome Retreat. Momma wants to go too, but she's worried about stuff she calls "logistics".
To get to the BAR, the map thingies tell us it will be about a 12 hour drive.Jessie and I are super good pups in the car, but we've never driven anywhere for NEARLY that long before. My top time is about 3 hours, and Jessie less than two. Momma knows she's have to make more rest stops for us but isn't sure how much that'll add to travel time.
And speaking of rest stops. Momma will be the ONLY human with us, so she's worried about things like how she goes in for HER rest stops. She can't take us into the fast food places or convenience stores she usually goes into, so she doesn't really know how that'll work.
With a drive that long, we're also going to have to stay in a hotel that night, plus the hotel at the BAR itself. We've also never stayed in a hotel, only at Grandma's house or Auntie's. Momma has no idea how we'll behave or what she should do to make us the most comfortable.
So we're turning to YOU, our pawesome furiends of Blogville. We know that lots of you travel a whole bunch, so I told Momma you would have some advice for us that would set her mind at ease. Don't let me down!
Well 12 hours is a long ride for mom to go by herself. We think you would have to stay at a hotel to break up the trip
ReplyDeleteWoooof,
Lily & Edward
We know we'll have to do that. We said we'd have to stay in a hotel along the way. But even broken up, it's still 12 hours of driving time.
DeleteCasey and Jessie you know I, Madi, am always there for you and ready to offer help and my Cat-tidude...but I must bow out of this one.
ReplyDeleteI do cars...but I won't be doing the BAR trip...you know why...my peeps don't like my road trip songs. Silly humans have sensitive ears
Good luck...Miss Dory travels a bunch maybe she can offer some tips
Hugs madi your bfff
That is a LONG trip. Aunty Freya did 5 hours on her way to MY Tower this year and she had potty break stops along the way
ReplyDeleteI finks you might have to break the journey in to more manageable bits. I nose all your furfriends will be soooo HAPPY to see you at BAR
Loves and licky kisses

the canine potty breaks i can see just taking more of them, but can't figure how you can do your potty or go in and buy food. do you have a friend that could go with you? i would not attempt it by myself.. maybe someone who travels will know.
ReplyDeletetry google search on travel with dogs alone
ReplyDeleteMe and Stanley have traveled on long trips ever since we were tiny puppy dogs. We ride in the truck, it has a crew cab or something like that. We sleep the whole time. When mom has to stop to pee we go pee but sometimes only every other time. We sleep in the little wheelie house at night. If you are alone and it's too hot to wait in the car (and that likely will be the case) you would have to use a drive through but the better idea would be to have a cooler with foodables in it. You would need to check with hotels for dog size limits as well as if more than one is allowed. The way to make this trip the easiest is to rent a small RV. That way lodging is not an issue at all and if your mom had to run into the store you can wait in the RV for a short time. We hope you can come!
ReplyDeleteYour Pals,
MURPHY AND STANLEY
Momma's going to look at the prices for a small RV. She'd thought about that earlier, but she's afraid the cost might be too much.

I have gone on long road trips but I usually have Ma and Daddy-dog with me so it makes it a lot easier for potty breaks and overall driving. Ma always packs a small cooler with snacks and such and sometimes we even go through the drive through! You may want to see if a friend can road trip with you!
ReplyDeleteYeah, food is the easy part. Momma's more concerned about her potty breaks, since she's too shy to just use the grass like WE do!
DeleteWe just read your comment about going on the grass. Do you know they make a shewee device for women. It's exactly what it sounds like. Ewwww! My advice would be...tell your Momma to -hold it - till you get to the hotel! (We don't have any other advice, our Mommy only takes us 20 minutes in the car tops. We whine and pant too much in the car to go any further than that.)
ReplyDeleteI've taken 4 dogs on a 12 hour road trip by myself. You've gotten some great advice, and I've nothing to add to it really.... I would just make sure Casey and Jessie are worn out beforehand, which helps. You'd be surprised how quick you can run in and out for yourself at a rest area, hold their leashes securely when it's their turn, bring those blankets and toys that smell like home, and most of all, make sure their collars are on securely with lots of ID. And finally, HAVE FUN!!! :-)
ReplyDeleteOur mom isn't sure about this, either. Especially being outside with us (Siberians!) in June. And yes to the potty breaks for mom, too.
ReplyDeleteHmm.
Cammie!
We made a 10 hour trip just this last June, but we had mom & dad with us. so one would potty and then the other. One would go in the fast food joint and get food. And RV rental might be comparable to Hotel rooms. We sure wish we could go too!

Wowsers....where do we start! Mama says there is so much to say, that we might do a whole post about it!! Mama made the trip from Austin, Texas way up here to Northern North Cali with all four of us and she was all by herself!! It was summer, and when she had to go potty she would lock us in the car (she has one of those clicky key lock thingies) with the A/C on...then RUN in and RUN out of the rest area.
ReplyDeleteThese are such great questions, and I think I'll have Mama do a more thorough post on the BAR page!
We really hope you can come!!

Momma's thinking it's going to be doable! She liked the idea of an RV but it's a little expensive for her and would be a LOT more in gas moneys. We have a code that lets us in the car even without a key, so Momma thinks she could do that with leaving the AC on for us while she RUSHES inside. :D
DeleteI drive four hours each way to start my work week and Abby goes with me back and forth to my crash pad. With accidents ahead it's been as much as 8 hours. For rest stops - I have a key where I can keep the truck running with heat or ac. as needed with a sign in the window that I'm the redhead lady in the rest room if anyone is concerned as to the dog in the running car just come get me (no one ever has but let's people know that weren't forgotten and I note the latest time on it). I bring a cooler with ice and extra water and food and a favorite toy to snuggle with. She can usually go much longer between rest stops than Ii can (having the worlds smallest bladder I think). Honestly she just sleeps the whole time so as long as she gets some playtime when we arrive she is good

There's a number of hotels that allow dogs. When I had Barkley - we stayed at a LaQuinta and as long as he had his bed and favorite toy he was fine.
Momma can get in the car with a code even without her key, so she's thinking she might be able to handle things that way, leaving us in it for a minute with the AC running and otherwise doing everything by drive-thru and what we've packed. Momma has a tiny bladder like you, so she was mostly worried about rest stops!
DeleteI've done lotsa really long drives, I mostly just sleep in da car. Usually dere are 2 peeps in da car wif me (my momma and Finley's momma) though, so da bathroom breaks for dem aren't a problem, dey just take turns. My momma has smuggled me into places in a carrier, but dat wouldn't work for y'all, bein so much bigger.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely bring water and bowls for da road trip, I like to drink at stops. And some treats of course. I usually don't eat real well on da road either, so sharin some fries or burgers is always a good idea. ;)
I'm usually pretty good in hotels, and I'm a barkaholic at home. Some toys help, and if ya can get a walk in to get y'all worn out, you'll sleep pretty good.
We commend your bravery for 12 hour trip cos our chicken livered mom is scared about the trip being 6 hours, and she is not even sure which one of us is going wif her, well we know for sure it is not Maggie. Mom does not do driving in big towns very well, so she is worried about that also. She really wants to go though....stellie rose
ReplyDeletep.s. another blogger might ride along wif us.
I hope you can come! I'd love to meet you in the furs.
DeleteIf you come through Iowa maybe we can follow each other, and that would help with the potty breaks......................Stellie Rose
DeleteUnfortunately, Iowa is WAY out of our way!
